Digital pedometers and fitness watches are all the rage at the minute with thousands of us climbing stairs and walking the long way to work in a bid to clock up a record number of steps each day.
Reports suggest that we should be aiming for 10,000 steps a day, while the NHS advises just a brisk 10-minute walk each day as part of your 150 minutes of recommended weekly exercise.
Whatever your target – wouldn’t you prefer to be counting the steps as you are walking through some of the most picturesque landscapes in Europe?
We certainly would, and that’s why we are supporting the #walk1000 miles campaign, in association with Trail Magazine, to get people up and walking!
From picking the right terrain to choosing your dream destination, we’ve got it all covered with our range of walking holidays in Europe at Whereabouts Holidays.
Where do you want to go?
Like any holiday planning, the first thing you need to decide on is where you want to go.
Luckily with Whereabouts walking holidays, you’ll have plenty of choice. We have walking tours available in 11 destinations right across Europe, from sun-drenched Portugal and Spain to the Scandinavian beauty of Finland and Sweden.
The weather is something that is well worth thinking about as it can often affect your enjoyment of your walking holiday.
Walking in the heat requires a certain level of fitness and the same applies to colder climates as well. Try and find the right balance between fitness levels and weather for maximum enjoyment out of your walking holiday.
Hilly or Flat?
The number one question when thinking about planning a walking holiday of any kind is the nature of the terrain. Do you want to be climbing up hills, or would you prefer to stick on the flat?
Both types of walking holidays can be just as enjoyable; it’s just a case of deciding which you prefer. We rank our holidays with an easy, medium or hard rating, which should give you some idea of exactly what to expect from that particular walking holiday.
Take our beautiful Discover Menorca walking holiday for instance, which visits the inland pine forest and picturesque coves of the island. We rate that walking holiday as ‘easy’ with the tour not requiring a high level of fitness or previous experience. Distances that you travel on our Menorca walking holiday are kept to a minimum with the emphasis on a leisurely and enjoyable walking holiday.
In contrast, our Slovenia walking holiday to the Julian Alps is for the more experienced, rated ‘hard’. We deem this walking tour to be for those over the age of 12, as it requires some basic experience of walking on high-level mountains, as you’ll come across sections of narrow paths as you climb.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
On all of our walking holidays you will stay at one or a selection of hotels, country lodgings, boarding houses and rustic huts offering warm hospitality. You don’t need to worry about muddy boots either as all of our accommodation has been picked because they understand the requirements of people on walking holidays.
In smaller towns, it may not be possible to offer 3 to 4-star accommodation, but where possible our walking holidays feature accommodation with comfortable rooms and private bathrooms. In more remote locations we may use mountain huts which will have shared facilities.
What equipment do I need?
If you are eying up a walking holiday to one of the mountain regions around Europe, it’s important to remember that the temperature can fluctuate, and conditions can change extremely quickly. You should always have something dry and warm with you regardless of the season. We recommend carrying a lunchbox and drink with you as you may be in areas that are not close to shops.
